FEATURED ARTICLE:

St. John’s Wort has a well documented record as an antidepressant. A large number of clinical trials show that it works as well as standard antidepressant drugs but with fewer and milder side effects. It does not impair sleep or cognitive function. Severe depression or depression resulting from a underlying problem (such as improper thyroid function or hypoglycemia) may not respond to St. John’s Wort. However. based on the available studies it is highly recommended for mild to moderate depression.

REPORT #10: St. John’s Wort
RECOMMENDED APPLICATIONS
Depression & anxiety
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
St. John’s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) is named after John the Baptist. The term “wort” is the Old English word for plant. During the Middle Ages, legend said that the plant originally sprang from the blood of John the Baptist when he was beheaded. This is unlikely, however, since there are reports of the plant being used by the ancient Greek physician Hippocrates who died nearly 400 years before that event.
The plant has been used for centuries as a diuretic, a remedy for gastritis and as a treatment for disorders of mood or sleep. Topically, it has been utilized for its astringent properties in the treatment of wounds or hemorrhoids. Long before depression was considered an illness, hypericum extracts from St. John’s Wort were used to treat worry, nervous unrest, sleep disorders and other symptoms of the disorder which we now classify as depression. In Germany, the extract is licensed for use in the treatment of anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. In fact, hypericum extract (HY) is the most commonly prescribed antidepressant in Germany with nearly three million prescriptions written each year..
